Hello,
I need to remove some nasty deposits inside the valve of a 1400 Winchester shotgun. It is a black substance, probably some kind of carbon formed with the shotshell gases. I try WD-40 and destilled petroleoum, but that dirt refuses to remove, even with an overnight treatment. I use a bronze brush and it makes scratches in the deposits, but that stuff is really difficult to remove. Any advise about a good solvent to remove that mess?
Thank you, as always, for sharing your knowldege.
Best,
Jose M. Fernandez

I soak in acetone and ATF- auto trans fluid. Let soak in a closed jar for a day- week-month and then wire brush. The ATF is very important due detergents, and surfactents. I have a 3' tube of the mix for my skeet tubes, works great. After a couple of days a brass brush makes line of trash that wipe out with ease.

Slip 2000. Buy a pint jar of it, drop the gas valve in and leave it a few days. Take it out and wash all the crap out of it under a faucet. For extra cleaning action, haul it in your truck for several days, allowing the valve to slosh around in the jar of liquid. Works great for extended choke tubes, too.
Good stuff, SRH
May God bless America and those who defend her.

Jose,
Common 'oven cleaner' will likely do what you want in the least expensive & most expedient manner.
General Motors 'combustion deposit remover' is another good mixture that will loosen carbon deposits, as would Mercury Outboard [Quicksilver] 'Engine Cleaner'
