I know Dr. Buzz is correct. Still, chatting up a girl wreathed in a smoke in a grungy college bar is one of those sublime 1990s experiences the youngsters will never have. But, nowadays the young gals text nude selfies so I guess the youngsters are okay.

I did't smoke while hunting partridge, but a quiet pause with a bowl mid-hunt was part of the ritual. Was thinking about starting again. I'm old enough that it probably wouldn't even affect a life insurance premium.

"...part of the ritual."

Finally the word I was looking for. For me it's the ritual within the ritual. I can't prep my tobacco or smoke a bowl without thinking of my Uncle Jack, a proud Irishman. God I loved him.

I was going to save this for St. Patrick's day, but with the esophageal cancer and heart attacks and what all else, who knows if I'll make it. You never know when He's coming back, or when you're leaving.

This poster might help bring this thread on topic. This is a reproduction that can be found on E-bay. I have an original from ca. 1920's.

Wow this got moving ! just got back from a trip to the high country , got 8 Ptarmigan with my Parker but had no pipe to enjoy ... too damn cold to take off my gloves to light it if I did ,I have no doubt tobacco is addictive no doubt at all but we all should be able to make our own choices ,this day and age we all know the consequence .....I have not smoked mine in likely three months ,I may tonight or maybe in a month from now who knows ? the mood strikes when it does , I've never found myself craving anything tobacco related just my personality I geuss,

but if a growed man wants to play Pirate and run around with a knife in his mouth its his choice really ,if he wants to put it in mine and push me around then that's different .

The old man smoked two packs a day and quit cold turkey ...he passed thirty years later from an aggressive brain tumor ,that was a surprise for everyone DR. included.

I don't really think it matters really what we do ,but moderation is the key I feel

Newf - (Chris?) My Dad always said "Moderation is for monks." But I didn't necessarily subscribe to his admonishions.... But then, I got my britches warmed more often than I care to count.

The centers for disease control (CDC) estimates the yearly total health care cost in the United States alone, due to smoking at $300,000,000,000.00 (i.e. $300-BILLION dollars). Smoking doesn't sound real healthy guys.......and a major drain on the health care dollars. Ever wondered why your health insurance, even before the ACA, was/is so darned expensive??? Hard to argue with the facts, eh. Btw Keith, your poster is pretty neat. Made me smile.

I've always tried to go by the old adage "Everything in moderation" but with a twist "including excess".

Nothing wrong with a little excess as long as it's in moderation.

I wish it was mine. It's G.K. Chesterton's, writing of Jane Austen: "All power comes from the direction and control of exuberance."
