Buzz, I was a long time light smoker of cigarettes. Would quit for a couple years then slide back into it. They always tasted great but i never wanted more than a few a day....10 would be a big day. Loved to smoke in the blind or on the chair lift skiing...something about the fresh air made them taste even better.

But I thought I really shouldn't be smoking but it was hard to stop permanently.

A few years ago got diagnosed with COPD. Nothing has ever been easier that throwing out the pack and never thinking about them again. Started running again after a 15 year layoff....decided that while I may have irreversible lung problems, the best thing I can do is get the heart/lung combo operating at max efficiency.

Except for the occasional rabbit tobacco self rolled experiments as a kid, I didn't smoke until after college. I wanted to quit but was not strong willed enough to do it. In 1993 Canada had passed its socialized medicine laws and was taxing cigarettes heavily.

I carried a carton of red Marlboros on my Saskatchewan duck trip that year. On purpose, I chain smoked them up smoked in two days. They were $7.50 a pack up there and I knew I was way too cheap to pay that no matter my addiction. By the end of the trip, I was over the withdrawal and haven't smoked since...Geo

Cigarettes and pipes aren't the same ballpark. Not even the same sport, to paraphrase Tarantino.

David-tin art would be comparable to the artwork on shell boxes. Much of it quite beautiful.

Not even going to get into all the health stuff. Newf pretty much summed it up for me.

Smoking a pipe is quiet and reflective. It's not about nicotine, though I don't mind a little nic hit. Very calming.

Just glad this thread flushed some of you other pipers out. I knew there had to be one or two of ya.

Keep puffin'...

Pipe smoking may not be in the same ball park or even the same game, but pipe smoking is equally as dangerous as smoking cigarettes. The same goes for cigars. If you don't believe me check out what they have to say at WebMD about this topic. I'm glad Canvasback and George quit smoking. Jim developed some COPD from just 10 cigarettes a day. Some folks are more prone than others, and Jim did himself a huge favor quitting when he did. People can quit, it's not easy, but it can be done.

Tried hard to enjoy tobacco as a teenager. Never got hooked on cigs, or any other kind of tobacco, tho' I certainly tried. Chewed Red Man, then Levi Garrett for twenty years. Swore if I ever met someone I believed contracted cancer from chewing I would quit. I did. Cold turkey, no problem. Started having a cigar, but never inhaled (I swear). Got up to six a day about 5 years ago. Banker suggested I needed more life insurance. Wanna guess why? While filling out application for a 250k additional term, I noticed question no longer asked if I smoked cigarettes, but if I used tobacco. Hmmm. My integrity being paramount I asked my agent for enlightenment. He says Prudential has an "occasional cigar smoker" rate, for someone who maybe has one or two cigars a week with the guys. I put on policy ----Cigars. How many? ---- One per week, says I. I got the preferred rate after my physical, I have not exceeded one per week since then, and the savings in cigar money is more than paying my premium on the additional 250k term. I "save them up" sometimes, tho', and may have two or three in a weekend on a hunt, but never over one per week for the year. My wife, who struggled with cigarettes for many years and finally quit completely is amazed that I can have one per week and never exceed that.

Tried a pipe but the tobacco "burnt" my tongue too much. Just not enough of a romantic to ignore it I guess.

I know a guy who has smoked one cigarette a day, for about 70 years. One cigarette, at 4:00pm or so, for his entire life, pretty much. He usually has his one beer or vodka tonic at the same time, but, not always. One drink per day, one smoke.
He was running half marathons until his early 80s. Says his feet hurt too much for that now, but, he rides his bike a lot. Good shape for an old guy.
I've asked him why he didn't just quit, but, he doesn't have a good answer.

I never started.

Best,
Ted
