Hi guys, about 3 years ago I was lucky enough to pick up a Webley and Scott Model 700. Early serial #, 2 1/2" chambers, very good condition, tight action, clean barrel, one owner since new in the late 40's. I parked it up in the gun cabinet for some time and while I was away in BC for 4 months recently, I had it refurbished and it has come up absolutely mint. It is all original except the previous owner had a rubber butt pad fitted many years ago and it had deteriorated to the point I had it replaced with an english looking red Pachmayr.
My dilemma now is I am short of funds - do I suck it up and keep it or do I put it up for sale? If I put it up for sale whats a ball park figure of what it may be worth?
Cheers, Al

Al,

Welcome on your first posting

If you need money to live on, sell it
If you need money to buy another gun, keep it

Sell it if it's to pay bills but understand you might not find another one like it. It is not like it's been your go to everything gun. It's been sitting in a cabinet, not being used. So you won't miss it that much. As to price, search the web. I'd look at several high end retailer with the understanding that if they are asking 5k they are not going to get that much and neither are you. You just don't want to vastly under price it.

Thanks guys, I have always wanted a good old sxs, for a bit of hunting and the odd sxs shoot at sporting clays, so bided my time until one came up. It sat in my guncase cos its difficult to source 2 1/2" ammo in my neck of the woods and I was wanting to tidy it up before I used it. I know I'll never find another in as good condition. Watch this space, I'm real keen on making sure it stays.

Always a dilemma. I was worried that I would regret selling a nice featherweight field grade LC Smith. I sold it. And now I have a much nicer WW Greener that I bought for less than I sold the LC for. It is amazing what you can find when you suddenly become fixated on finding a new gun.

Don't forget too, if you're younger and it is not the gun of your dreams or does not hold sentimental value, there will be many other opportunities in the form of other guns. You could always sell it for $2500 and spend a grand on another shooter as well, applying the balance to your fund needing situation.

You said you'd never find another in such fine condition..that says it all...keep it if possible.

Shoot 2 3/4" reloads with a couple of 1000 psi less than the gun was proofed for....loads of folk do that from what they say here...
I would too, if I had a 2 1/2" chambered gun
cheers

If it's "refurbished", how can it be "absolutely mint" or "all original"?

And if it is "refurbished", I think you'll have a tough time getting $2500US for it.

Half that, maybe -- if it was not messed up too much.

Backcountryal, you mention being in BC for a while but you haven't put your location. Do you reside in Canada? I ask because the market for SxS in Canada is quite different than in the US. And not in a good way if you are a seller.

If you do live in Canada and want a good sense of the market up here, join gunnutz and post your question and pics of the gun in the shotgun forum. You will get lots of good advice.
