If that's the case, why are there different solutions, and why would anyone care which they used? I've been trying to determine which solution to use, and if it will work the same, steam or boiling. If it doesn't make any difference with the outcome of the work, that would be great to know.


I use Gun Goddess or LMF, boil or steam, results are the same.

I bought some Swiss solution from rustblue.com today. At some point I'll give LMF a try too. Thanks to all for the feedback.

B - The LMF really is easy to work with. It gives a satin finish, not shiny, if used per the directions, i.e. it gives a stronger etch than some.

Thanks Judge. I'll give it a try next go-round. I've got some dents to remove from a 20ga Sterlingworth (Savage re-barrelled) barrel, and then I'm ready to with my first rust blue undertaking.

If it turns out well, then my plan is to give it to my wife. She hasn't exactly asked for her own shotgun, but maybe she'll like it anyway and come out shooting clays with me.

Getting ready to start tonight or tomorrow night. A couple of questions:

Do I need to worry about solution in the bore or not? Some say coat with lacquer and clean it up later. Others say polishing the bore later will clean up whatever goes on.

If lacquer, I would simply swab the bores with a lacquer impregnated patch.
