I've owned three 12g Browning sidelocks. They were all between 6 1/4 and 6 1/2 lbs. They didn't feel clubby to me.terc They probably did fit you. A gun that fits isn't going to feel "clubby". Best, Ted

Ted's right of course that one gun won't fit everyone, but I still have a hard time imagining the 12ga BSS Sidelock I have feeling "clubby" to anyone...Geo

Depending on barrel length, a standard grade boxlock (not the straight grip Sporter, which is lighter) can push 8 pounds.
That's what my buddy had as I just called him so he did not have the sidelock. The thing was outrageously heavy for an upland game gun but he sold it for more money then he paid for it. That's the way he was, only guy I ever knew that was fully employed but still had employers calling him to ask him if he wanted a job. Some of the 12ga boxlocks--not a lot--came with 30" barrels. I expect some people who are looking for a gun to shoot in sxs sporting clays competition might choose one of those (likely with choke tubes installed) as their competition gun. People looking for a game gun, however, would find that such a gun handles like the proverbial pig on a shovel.

Larry, I have one of those exactly as you describe with 30" barrels. It looks like it should handle as you suggest and it weighs 8 lbs even. It is a target gun and it balances and swings pretty darn well. it soaks up a lot of recoil too. No, I would not want to carry it in the field but then that is not what it is for.
So many guns, so little time!

Builder, if it's working out as a target gun for you, that's the important part. I saw a 30" BSS at a local store a couple years back. Price was something like $1100, which I thought was pretty decent because you don't see the 30" guns often. Recommended it to a guy who was contemplating a sxs for targets. There are also some SKB Model 100 12ga Magnums out there (the only Ithaca SKB 12's with 3" chambers) that have 30" tubes and might make good target sxs for those looking for slightly lighter guns.

People looking for a game gun, however, would find that such a gun handles like the proverbial pig on a shovel. I have a BSS boxlock Sporter with 30" barrels, and a Miroku/Daly 500 with 30" barrels. Both are M/F and make pretty decent late season dove guns when the birds are high and fast. Also nice to shoot in high winds. The 500 with its PG/splinter is trimmer than the BSS, but both swing quite well. The BSS Sporter 30" also looks about as good as any basic boxlock ever needs to look. The long barrels were retrofitted to both guns, which came with 28s.
