Since we're talking about knowledge for knowledge sake, I thought I would mention that on several of the other shooting sites I frequent, Cast Boolits and ShotgunWorld.com, there are frequent discussions about the use of round balls. These discussions center around the relationship of bore diameter to wad ID and OD and the various combinations of hard or soft fibre or card wads both in and out of the plastic wad.

Enough so that I'm tempted to buy some of these round balls and try them out in an older cylinder bored Bay State brand single I have around the house.

The back half of my property is in flood plain and has ample mud banks to test the hole making properties of round balls. Eventually, I'll get around to it.

Well I went home at lunch to do a little test. I already knew that both triggers would cock (you can see them work thru the busted stock)and the safety worked I just didn't know if the firing pins were still in working order. So I primed a couple of 12ga hulls and stuck some 20ga wads in them and then went outside and did some bump testing to see if it would fire without pulling the triggers and it passed that so I then pulled the triggers, both were nice and crisp and both worked fine firing the 20ga wads out of the barrels. I started this thread to learn some history about this old double gun. Not for someone to tell everyone that its junk. I do agree with you it will take a whole lot more money to restore it than it's worth and I may or may not have it restored.

Thanks to all that posted, Robert

Pete, I wondered if you'd be kind enough to expand further on this comment regarding IGC. Being English I am wary of the difference in language - and nuance - between our two great countries. As GBS said 'two nations divided by a common language' so I don't wish to take offence on behalf of the IGC if none was meant!

Besides which, I'd like to learn, as we should never stop doing so.

Tim,

No offense was meant in my statement. It is just that the info in that database typically blows off anything non-British. I have written the owner several times with some expanded content. The result has always been silence. I am told he is very responsive to same type of information coming from the UK.

In this instance when JP died that was pretty much it. When William Golcher died, it was just the beginning. All together 5 generations of Golchers were involved in the business until the last one passed in the late 1940's.

A Golcher was hired by Philadelphia to make and teach others to make barrels for the revolution. While another branch of the family, that remained in England, was involved in making guns for the British army.

On the other hand, the IGC is a huge benefit to that part of our community involved in researching and documenting the history.

Got it, thank you.

Interesting to learn more about the Golchers.

Franc Otte,
You're not alone. I too cast 20-b round balls (.620)
I use them in a pinfire double rifle.

Ball, or, otherwise.

Best,

Thanks Teddy. You've bashed it on 2 forums now. I think we get the message.

And I thought Ted was too senile to find another forum....

My suggestion is to donate it to the local Cracker Barrel then when you go eat there you can gAze upon it...

it would be a big job to bring that gun back to life ,if you can do the work yourself it could be done.there are classes at some colleges in the the summer,Trinidad Colorado has a very good class and instructors.first check if the barrels can be saved .wall thickness, dents, chambers.good luck,,and never listen to anything joe has to say.mc
