I know, it's high tech but it is the neatest tool I've found for cleaning the hinge pin and action recess. The hook end pushes a cleaning patch all around the hinge pin and even reaches underneath where I was never able to reach. . The squared end is great for cleaning the rest of the action recess. Popsicle stick and it can be made in just a couple minutes. Enjoy!

The square end of the tool is also great for pushing out the barrel wedge on early type forends. No marring or danger of doing other damage.

George, sticks from fudgesicles have a nice walnut patina. However, I would prefer a tad more reddish color to be historically correct.....

The cherry Popsicle stick, first used by Joe on early English doubles, closely matches the alkanet root red stain. However, the section of the stick not stained by the cherry sickle should be wrapped in a 3 oz pigskin. To match the intensity of the color, a licking technique is used. 3-5 licks, followed by a check against the stock should be done. Alternatively, a double sided slurp method can be used to adjust the color. Finishes used run from shellac to varnish and lacquer. But authentic traditional finish is a baked egg white finish.
This was all covered in the original manuscript of Shotgun Technicana, when David Trevallion and McIntosh interviewed Joe on this device. But a legal battle ensued over the division of royalties anticipated to be generated from the device, and it was struck from the book at the eleventh hour before the presses began, at the ruling of the 9th district federal court in wood vs Trevallion. Over the years, Trevallion has managed to outmaneuver wood.
