Holy smokes Chuck, I just noticed something, you started this thread back in March 2012 and it took you this long to buy one of these things? I take it that given their low out put there isn't a lot them around in the first place and the people that bought them don't want to part with them. That right there may be or is a testament to their quality.

That is a beautiful little gun. As you say the action is tiny.
Reminds me of a Swiss watch.
As Treb says, that was a iong sales cycle.
I am glad to be here.

Sometimes you need to wait to get the deal you are looking for. I just completed purchase on a gun I first inquired about in 2011.

Sometimes you need to wait to get the deal you are looking for. I just completed purchase on a gun I first inquired about in 2011. I waited a lot longer for one of my 410 NID guns. I first saw it on the net about 7 years before I bought it. It was a 28" ejector 410 NID. I made an offer that was declined. It didn't sell for a couple years and finally the seller started dropping the price. It went below my offer and I was about to contact him when it disappeared off the net. I think a member here bought it. Roll forward 5 years, I was in Seattle on business and one evening, drove an hour southeast to a little village where this gun store was. They had some interesting doubles listed from time to time on the net. Also they had a Win 42 listed I was interested in. I got there around dark and the owner and I were the only people in the place. We struck up a conversation on old guns and I brought up the 410 NID he had listed 5 years earlier. He was surprised I recalled that gun. Then he surprised me when he said he still had it. He went in the back and brought it out. I looked it over and bought it. So yeah, I've waited a bit for some guns. A few years later, I spotted a new listing for a 28" ejector NID 410. I had only seen one 28" 410 NID before...mine. I called right away and asked to verify the barrel length and ejectors. After that we discussed condition and a price. When it arrived, I noted the serial number was 3 digits from the first gun. I contacted Walt and he gave me the history of them being produced on the same shop order, but sold to opposite coasts. I believe Walt said these are the only 28" 410 NIDs he's aware of. The only ones I've seen were 26". I thought Dave Noreen may have mentioned he saw a 28" 410 NID decades ago. Back together after nearly 90 years.

Chuck, what are you going to do with all those .410s after the CA lead ammo ban has fully kicked in? I'm already tired of having to leave the state to hunt with smallbores.

Well, for the past 4-5 years there hasn't been anything to hunt here anyway. I've been driving to AZ and other states. The cyclical drought pattern in southern California seems to provide a few years of decent quail hunting, followed by 4-5 years of extremely poor hunting. So, when I do hunt California, I'll likely shoot a 20 or 28 ga with steel. I've been thinking of finding an inexpensive sxs in 20 or 28 ga to bore out to shoot steel.

Chuck, I have a couple Pieper 16 gauge guns from around 1922 I believe, one a field grade and the other a mid grade level gun, configured identically and also just three serial numbers apart. It is kinda amazing to bring them back together after so many years apart.

So, when I do hunt California, I'll likely shoot a 20 or 28 ga with steel. I shot a limit of doves in AZ last month with #7 steel in an old Citori 12, just to see how it would work. Birds died, but not always near where they were hit. Lots of flying crips, like duck hunting, where they were obviously hit and then fell out of the sky 50 yards downrange. Steel worked, at least in the 12 with 1 oz loads, but I don't like it.
