I'm not trying to validate steel shot in older guns. It has been established years ago that old shotguns of collectible grade and or condition with tight chokes and soft-soldered barrels are not compatible with common iron shot. To use iron shot in double gun brazed barrels and choke constriction of < 3/4 are preferred. If I recall correctly European requirement is proof of at least 1200bar (per rules of 1989). I see no reason not to use light upland steel loads in older single barrel shotguns in very good mechanical order with little choke constriction and sound barrels of adequate wall thickness. To minimize barrel damage the English recommend matching chamber marking to the cartridge ie no 2&3/4" shells in 3" chambers.
