Ideal cutting speeds are many times the average gunsmith's use of cutting tools. There is a some rationale for going slowly. Like when your setup is weak. But taking it off too slowly will not yield as good a surface finish. Few gunsmiths are good machinists and few machinists are good gunsmiths.
