8 days till opening day---but who's counting besides me? Yesterday, was lucky enough to get drawn for the Fallsville limited dove hunt.
This will be my second time to hunt Fallsville out of 5 years standing with the unwashed masses hoping to get drawn for September 1st hunt.

Now-what sxs to take will be my next decision-- my new RBL in 20 gauge that has not yet been fired or my AYA #1 in 28 gauge. Oh what a delima--
Are any of my fellow sxs members having the same conundrum?

I guess dove season just does not mean the same thing to animal rights folks as it does to many of us...Geo

I have a real basic way I cook dove, i cut the meat away from the breast cook in a pan in butter about medium done--salt pepper serve with wild rice. Or leave breast whole place in my smoker for 2 to 3 hours don't want them tuff but moist and tender (I use hickory). Season serve with sweet corn and salad with fresh tomatoes and a nice beer normally a Pilsner.
And always tell your guest your not responsible for BB s

28: sounds good to me...have heard dove don taste so good. kinda like wood cock...will give your recipes a whirl with free range chicken.

sad that we up here in new england aint got enough grouse left in the woods to hunt, without feeling guilty of extermination...now, bet your recipes would work wonders with grouse an quail, if there were any wild ones left east of the alleghenies.

Heck we don,t have any grouse anymore in Ohio. Well just say lucky to hear one drumming in the spring I heard 2 different birds this spring and I could not believe my ears. We have woodcock still but when out hunting woodcock if we point grouse an fly him no one shots I can remember 50 flush days in Ohio back in the late 70 Early to mid 80 the last grouse I took here in Ohio was back in 2001 we flew 6 birds I took 2 and dad killed 1 this was a spot next to the Ohio river which was no more than a 2 hour hunt went back in the the following year flew 2. Went further down the road flew 3 wild flushes no birds were taken that year and I gave not taken a grouse since did fly one over point woodcock hunting last year just watched him clear the tree tops and set his wings.
Say if your in NH, VT has a nice population of grouse.

28: had no idea yall ever had a huntable population of grouse in ohio...sorry that is no more...

as for grouse in vermont and elsewhere in new england, only northern maine is known to have enough birds left to make it worthwhile...what have you heard about vermont prospects this year?

Not me-and for two salient reasons- One being MI does not have a dove season- most likely never will- Two being- Sept 1st opens the 15 day early goose season, five bird daily limit for those who bring a wheelbarrow along with their shotgun. My choice will be which 12 gauge m12 will I use.. Also, being a devout Catholic, the Pope doesn't allow us to use conundrums, so again, that accessory du jour is "out of the loop" for me, if I were shagging down to next door Indiana, where they do have a legal dove season. Then I suppose I could choose between a 20 gauge M12, or a 28 gauge M12. I like the 28 gauge, except when I buy shells- expensive little devils to feed, ey wot??
