First I apologize for making an off-topic post, I just know from past experience that someone here can give me a knowledgeable answer to my question.

I�ve been in Niagara Falls NY helping a friend prepare his family home for sale. While there I came across his 1960�s vintage smoothbore Crossman BB gun. The gun�s broken and he was going to throw it out. He said I could have it and now I�m wondering how I can get it back to Texas. Since I�m flying back to Houston I wonder if the airlines would have a problem accepting such a �lethal weapon� in my checked baggage. As an alternative, I suppose I could ship it to my domicile address in Livingston Texas like I did years ago for a shotgun I purchased in Alaska. Does anyone here have any ideas?

BTW in my own defence for this OT post. I suppose you could say it is a smoothbore shotgun (one BB shot at a time)

Flying in the USA with guns is no problem. You just have to show it to them at the counter and sign the little red card saying it is not loaded. No separate container required, put it in you suitcase if it fits. Has to be in baggage though...Geo

P.S.: On further reflection, you may have to put a lock on your suitcase.

Why not send it to the Crossman factory a little east of Rochester for repair and let them ship it to you in Texas??

I'd mail it to myself or to Crossman as Walt suggests and have them fix itup and then return it to you at your home address.

They've changed the regs slightly recently and removed airgun from their general 'firearm' deffinition and given it its own.
A stroke of genius....

Bring a copy of the regs to the PO with you, you never know what mind-set will be behind the counter.

I want to thank those who have responded to my query. It finally dawned on me to phone Southwest Airlines. I was told I could bring it with me as long as it was packed in a locked gun case. I currently don�t have a gun case so I purchased an inexpensive one at Gander Mountain and will use it. Southwest allows two checked bags so taking it with me won�t cost any more.

Sending it to Crosman is a good idea except that I want the pleasure of fixing it myself (it�s a Steve thing).

As far as the USPS goes, I�m currently living/traveling in an RV and don�t have a current stable domicile to ship it to other than my mail drop, which would end up entailing more costs to reship it after I settle in my new temporary home (I�m currently looking at Ruidoso NM).
