I picked this Lyman 48 from the detritus of Ebay, ostensibly for my Krag custom carbine.

Unfortunately, it turns out to be a Krag based mismatched with a Winchester 70 slide. It's a tight fit, but the slide won't fit over the bolt sleeve of the Krag action, rendering it useless for my purpose. I'd also prefer a longer slide, with more vertical adjustment, all things being equal.

Too bad, too, because it's really clean and I like the looks of the early style target knobs.

In my excitement to find a clean 48K, I neglected to check the shape of the slide. I will never make that mistake again! So, back to the seller it goes, sadly.

Howdy Brian!

Read your post (unfortunate outcome) and never realized it were you. I'd bet the folks here would love to see a picture of your Krag should you get the chance.

Cheers,
Hoot

I may have a slide that will work for you. I will look. It is a longer slide, left side mount.

Hoot! Hello. I will post pics of the Krag. Found some interesting refinements "under the hood" yesterday that I hadn't noticed before.

Hope to see you soon!

Here's the little rifle in question, a sporterized Krag model 96.

It's got some neat touches, and a couple features that NEED touches wink The three-leaf sight is nice, although the blades need refreshing and the springs have just about given up. The 18 1/2" barrel is a replacement, chrome lined .308 job, and the barrel band and front sight are Lyman parts. I haven't been able to identify the ramp, but it wouldn't surprise me it it, too, were a Lyman part. The butt plate is a Niedner-style replacement. Markings have all been scrubbed, all the surfaces were prepped and the entire action - minus bolt - and barrel are deeply blued.

The story I got when I bought it, dirt cheap, was my seller bought it from the estate of a machinist who remodeled it for his use in the PA woods. Apparently my seller didn't like it because it wasn't "original", which I understand, but for my use it is about perfect.

The aperture, and eventually, sourdough-type front sights will only improve it in my opinion. I suspect that eventually I will reshape the comb as well, but more shooting will inform that decision.

That's a trick little rifle!
My unsolicited $0.10. Really, really like the front part of the stock, slim, trim, great lines often screwed up by stockers trying to make a Mannlicher. Trigger guard back, though needs some re-shaping. I think you're correct as far as the comb but also the steep drop with the bottom ˝ of the grip. If there's enough meat there, taking some off the front of it and sweeping it back looks like it would go a long way towards svelting it up. Or...use the pixx out of it and enjoy it!!! Great grab!!

Thx. It's a funny quirk. It's not uncomfortable to shoot, so I'm keeping it as is, for now. When I have a better idea of what and why to change it, I'll move forward with caution.

Thanks for your comments.
