I like everything about the gun, especially it's configuration--double trigger and splinter forend, and uncut stock. Single triggers and beaver tails are a huge turnoff for me. Yes, I'm sure it's overpriced (though I know nothing about a 21's market value) but it seems every time I'm told that I go years without finding another. Call them and suggest it seems overpriced. By now they're probably willing to reconsider.

I've been able to buy a couple 21's at great prices. They are field guns and I love shooting them. If you are seriously interested in the gun, talk to the seller, convince them you're serious and work the price issue. You might be surprised. I love shooting my 6lb game guns, but if I am gonna shoot 100+ 7/8oz target shells in a day I am reaching for a 7lb gun.

that is a 2750 gun all day, and thats with the substantial 21 collector boost.......4000 brings on my gag reflex....but Iv found that most folks selling Winchester 21s try to bleed every last cent they can out of the "Winchester" mystique....

Gunut it's not just Winchesters. Also Browning and Parkersburg seem to make sellers think the name adds 25% to the price. Funny thing is that neither maker made limited numbers of guns. A "rare" one might be one of hundreds or even thousands. One of five is rare one of a hundred or thousand is not. Buy the gun not the name saves you thousands if you stick to it.

Are you Collecting or shooting? Big difference in what I'm willing to spend to enjoy it for many years. If you are shooting I have a 3 digit 2nd year gun. 28" barrels m/f in as nice or better condition. It is currently very nicely stocked straight hand 15 1/8" over solid pad. The gun comes with the original umolested stock with Win plate. If you are interested. I thought I would use it for a trip out west but 2 in college so it will just sit for the next 6yrs at least. contribution to board if sold, will probably list here shortly any way before GB.

I like to own and shoot classic guns whose condition will not be deteriorated by being used as they were intended to be used.

I also know that I like to turn over my collection and I do not want to pay a hefty premium over the reasonable market price.

Whether it is a Winchester Model 21, Rolls Royce or what have you, not everything branded with the name is worth something.
I can't understand the allure to purchase 'junk' with a name?
The pictured Model 21 isn't quite 'junk' but it certainly isn't worth much in my opinion.
Sellers find these things all the time and $$ signs light up their eyes!

I see the same psychology is other areas of collecting.
Old Porsche's that are probably unsafe at any speed astound collectors and fans.
I don't know what you would do with this 12 M21. You need soft non-toxic shot for waterfowl and more and more areas are restricting the use of lead shot.

Obviously, people are free to like any shotgun, and are free to pay whatever price they want for a shotgun.

But what am I misunderstanding about these three characteristics? The M21 is heavy for gauge, the receiver is bulky, and they are crazy expensive for what you get . . . ?

And, the contribution to this discussion is that the original question was "Is it a $4000 gun" and the answer is "No, it is not a $4000 gun." My fault for phrasing it in a way that some may not have understood.

I would bet that this gun barely makes seven pounds. I'll weigh mine later today. My mint 21, identical to the one being discussed, is a very early gun that I value at $4500. I won't ship the gun, however, because someone who doesn't know 21s will swear it has been refinished. When I sell it, I don't want it to be returned. I agree with Charlie, that those who disparage the 21 have probably never shot one or had one in their hands. I've got 50 years of 21 shooting and have had them as light as six pounds, magnum 12s as light as 7 1/4.

I have handled plenty of M21's. I am always struck how well they balance for a heavy, bulky gun.
