It is my belief, (based upon scientific ballistic tests carried out recently with modern ammunition AND in the field personal shooting experience) that for hunting with a fixed choke gun Modified and Improved Modified are the most effective chokes.
While we are on the subject of choke.
Could we please refer to them in their correct terminology please which is English terminology as follows Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Quarter, Half, Three Quarters & Full
You came over here in 1938-46 and stole our Women. In the 1960's you began to steal our guns, now George Bush is stealing our young boys and using them as Cannon fodder, there is now talk of The Gulf Stream being stopped from warming our shores. Come on Guys where is it going to end?

salopian: Thanks for the chuckle. A question on terminology. I eventually figure out but always struggle with the numeric measurements, which is why I prefer the simpler C, IC, M, IM and F. Sometimes we also use Skeet 1 and Skeet 2 (which, I believe, essentially straddle Improved Cylinder), and Extra Full to describe the tightest of chokes (for turkey hunting, etc.). We make finer distinctions with terms like "tight Mod" and "light Mod." I also thought I understood the very straightforward Brit terms of Quarter, Half, Three Quarters and Full. But in your listing above, you mention "Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Quarter ..." Can you explain the difference between Improved Cylinder and Quarter for this slow Yank? TT P.S. According to a program I watched recently on The History Channel, it was the Danes, a thousand years earlier, who tended to steal your women right and left. During WWII, we Americans honored one of the lessor-known terms of the Lend-Lease Act and merely borrowed them.

Salopian, You can look at as having stole those things from England, but I think it's more accurate to say we borrow and learn from the best cultures that make up our eclectic society. And you otta know better than to think anyone could own or steal a women.

MnFn- I hunt pheasants in South Dakota (my home) using fairly open chokes; I have had no troubles that I can blame on the chokes. I recommend that one barrel have a somewhat open choke and the other barrel a somewhat not open choke.

Jim Legg, Yes I am a Brit, but more importantly I am English and from the Premier County located in Central England. The County where it is a proven fact that King Arthur REALLY had his Court, where Excalibar was pulled from the Lake.Where the first battle was fought in the Civil War ( Battle of Shrewsbury) where guns were first used in War against the Bowmen.Proud Salopian. Ha Ha.
Quarter Cylinder is usually expressed as 25 thou of constriction on a 0.729" Bore (12) and improved cylinder is usually 0.005" constriction. But those constrictions as we know does not necessarily throw the correct percentages.
Anyway stop bickering and obey your King. "Guards off with their heads "

Uh... .025" should be 'Three Quarter' choke.
'Improved Cylinder' and 'Quarter Choke' should be essentially the same at about .010"

See what I mean? You don't even know your "own" system and you want to correct "ours"! It's not "quarter cylinder", it's quarter choke and that would be equal or similar to "our" improved cylinder, which is .010", not .005", for 12 gauge.
