Jim a simple question but hard to give a true definite answer. If it is a Brit vintage case the glue used will be pearl or rabbit skin glue, and a wallpaper steamer will be the ideal tool for the job or next best covering the label with a warm and wet cloth though this will need more than one application. Animal types of glue was used on some American cases but also casein types of glue where used and more difficult but not impossible to remove a label with steam/water. But moving up to more recent times PVA glues became more common in use and some of them are water resistant and in consequence practically impossible to remove a paper label in an undamaged condition.
