Around 1900 Woodward sold a boxlock. Does anyone know who made these boxlocks for Woodward? I assume they were manufactured in Birmingham by someone and maybe finished in London by Woodward. Where they all best grade boxlocks or a variety of grades? Thanks

Hi, Katefors. Mostly Webley & Scott made mid-grade guns. Probably bought in finished (the level of craft skill required to build best sidelock guns would be wasted on pedestrian boxlocks). #4672 for 18 Dec 1894 is an A&D BLE 12 bore #2 of a pair most likely made in the Woodward shop as it has Woodward marked barrels. But, it is not a best work gun.

I have 14 Boxlocks in my virtual collection as database for above.

An older gentleman I shoot with has a Woodward boxlock that was featured in Shooting Sportsman many years ago. Very nice gun.

James Woodward sold A&D action guns from around 1900 through to when they were acquired by J Purdey & Sons in 1948.

Like many other London gunmakers of the period, they had to oblige their customers requirements, not only for their best guns made in their own workshops with assistance from London based trade outworkers, but also for less expensive guns which may be required for keepers, wives, sons and daughters (not necessarily in that order!).

Woodward records, held by Purdey, will indicate which guns were made for them by the trade. It is known that John Harper, Claborough & Johnson and Osborne provided Woodwards with A&D guns.
