I need to remove marks from a sight base soldered to the barrel and then blue the base. I want to preserve the surrounding original finish.Removing the base is not feasible. Any techniques you can recommend would be appreciated.

I never had to do it, but if I had to, I'd try fingernail polish. Your wife probably has a color she doesn't like anymore, mine always did. First, I'd try some on an old barrel or piece of steel and see if the touch-up blue would react with the nail polish, or lift it and get under it. If not, I'd paint the surrounding metal with it, touch up the blue on the sight base, then remove the polish with acetone. Enamel paint might work, too. Would just use some paint remover to remove it after touch up.

I would cover the area you want to save with Lanmar tape, item#622-3R. lightly polished out the marks and wire wheel to homogenize the finish then either use Mark lee's express blue on the base or Pilkington's and then try the steam conversion method. It is quite easy to build a PVC tube to hold the barreled action in for the steam conversion.

Thanks for the information. I tried the simplest possible approach first and applied some touch up cold blue. It worked OK, but I know express blue would be better. I'm getting lazy in my old age.

I've had excellent results touching up small bare spots with Brownells Oxpho Blue. I use a small paint brush to keep it to the area I'm addressing.

Ditto Vall's solution, except I apply it with a piece of soft cottom cloth wraped around my finger tip.No or little prep is required and application can be repeated until color matches precisely.

Although I've thought it might work, I've never done steam conversions. Some pictures of your setup and a bit of detail would be greatly appreciated.
