Gunney is looking for some history on a very nice Ithaca double he just found at a yard sale.

It has 32 inch barrels Damascus type and with a lot of really beautiful engravings on it low serial number 157xx.

He was told that by this serial number it could have been made between 1889 and 91 the number falls in an area of lost numbers for dating.

Anyone have info on this number set??

Pictures to hopefully follow.

It is true that the records from this era were lost in a fire. The gauge and grade will be on the water table and the frame size may be number under the top lever. It is a Crass Model. Can he post photos??

The Ithaca gauge is 12 and also has a 2 which to me could be grade. 3 patent dates Serial 15789 Pat'L April 10 1888, May22 1888 and March 5 1889 if that helps. All numbers match Pictures may follow possibly by Skeettx

Thank you Skeettx for posting the pictures also Thank you Walter for some History on the Gun. The person I purchased it from had been using it, he was loading brass shells with black powder. Not sure how safe it is to shoot but he was having no problem. He gave me a box of 25 with the gun. I may give it a try not sure though. I am always cautious about shooting a 125 year old gun. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you all for your interest and help with these great instruments of the past.

Check barrels for pitting
Get the barrels measured by someone who knows and has the proper equipment.
Get an opinion from a SXS smith of knowledge

I have a Crass like this (8 lb.,10 ga.,30 in.,Grade 2, mod/full) that was made in 1889 +/-, 13,xxx serial #, as a pigeon gun. The stock behind the tang is cracked and was reinforced with a cross pin before I acquired it. I have since further reinforced the area with acrylic glue. I shoot 8-9000 psi. smokeless loads in it and love the thing.

If the barrels are sound, then load smokeless to the proper pressure level and go forth to SLAUGHTER.

ENJOY!

Oops its a grade 2 not pigeon. How high up do the grades go of that time period? I realize this is not pigeon grade. Wishful thinking. Thanks

Joel
