You shoot it in the rain must mean it's a rain gauge, huh, Jay? The universally-preferred terms are big gun and little gun. It's so obvious!

Check out " Spaniels In The Field Magazine". There are two senior hunters and one junior hunter ACS's in the last two issues. Not real common but I guess they are out there. I'd love to see one in action some time.

Never thought of that Jack. I've always considered my plebian pump a versatile gun, might give that a try.

Well I looked the chart over. I fear the day cometh when someone will claim to have lost their forepart. I think I'll just die laughing now and not wait.

Hey Jack,How close did you look the 1960 Purdey "Order Form Over" I remember Tom Purdey, In between"Small Glass's of Scotch",in the 'Old" Long -Room( back when I was 15yrs old,) saying to Harry Lawrence"Dammed Yanks want to call the 'Bend" something like'Droop'!!!!!!So, Purdeys used the term Gauge...and Bore!!!!Remember there is the Btitish Terminology, Then the English Terms, Then the Others would follow.....Brummies, Scouse's,Scottie's....I well remember a American Chappie' at the SCI, Several Years ago,Telling McKey Brown,"You Brits just cant get it Right for us Americans'!!!It took Nelson,Myself, and 1 Other to keep'McKilt" from spreading the news' That you dont call a Scottish Gunmaker a"Brit".Monty Python would have had a great 'Skit' from this Thread!!!!I'm glad that no Humor worked its way into this!!!!Crossedchisles. pee-ess, I had to pay $200. for that original JP&S Catl. One bourne every Dec 32nd.....

DT, I didn't think it was an order blank from Walmart but, no, I didn't look that close. I'm sure Jimmy Purdy would also find me amusing in my strawhatcanepolehayseed sort of way. I still think receivers should "receive" something but action bars not.

JR' The point I wanted to point out was that The word 'Gauge' headed up the left-hand column, and the word Bore is used for the Choke constriction.Just an Observation from a Old London Gunmaker! As to the Definition of Receiver/Action, I willnot comment....McIntosh and I went Round & Round, and Round yet again, when we were writing Vol.1 of Shotgun Tech. But what about this 'Water-Table'?...My Old 'Matey" from the Ejector-Shop at JP&S(1953-1970)felt it came from the British Navy where they had a 'Plimsole' Line around the Ship?????? DT/cc

DT: yes I see indeed. Generic gauge; specific bore diameter. The Ithaca catalog page reproduced by Walt Snyder is "bilingual" but without the refinement of meaning. The trouble with water table as a borrowing from the lines upon which a ship or boat sits empty or loaded is that no one I know has ever seen the word table used after "water" or "Plimsol" in that context. "Projecting ledge or string course" from achitecture seems more likely. I like the "detonating" from Brit shop lingo but have never construed it to be derived from the ballads of long-haul trucking, as in "36 tons of detonatin steel, over eighteen wheels that smoked and squealed. Had to ride er down, I couldn't jump free. Or there'd be a big hole where that little town uuuuused to be." --"Nitro Express"
