They could have gathered to demand better enforcement of VA laws banning gun sales to the mentally ill. They could have demanded better tracking of mentally disturbed VT students. They could have expressed their concern about lax enforcement of existing gun laws, and supported the teachers whose red flags about the shooter were ignored by the VT administration.

Instead, VA gun owners were shown on national television holding a rally to defy NY Mayor Bloomberg's ridiculous gun control proposals. They made a point of showing their firearms, and raffled off, among other things, a handgun, while the mother of one of the murdered students demonstrated outside. Talk about a made-for-anti-gun-media exhibition!

No, gun owners shouldn't duck our heads and accept blame for the act of a lunatic. But we could and should show greater awareness of public opinion, and do a better job of presenting our case. Honest concern and constructive action could have helped. Belligerent defiance doesn't.

Jack - I tend to agree with you. HOWEVER, there does come a time when after unsuccessful and prolonged use of politeness, explanations, presentation of facts, etc., the only way to get your point across is to put it in the "adversary's" face. Are we there yet? I don't know, but we're certainly traveling in that direction. Remember reading in your history books about the Revolutionary War?

I'm not sure that Bloomberg's gun control measures don't violate Federal Law. I thought that the information a 4473 was "restricted information" and even the Feds were supposed to destroy it after 72 hours (we all know better but that's what the law was supposed to be about).

The situation with the gun raffle has been in the works for several months and was in response to Mayor Bloomberg's illegal sting operation. I know some the people who were involved in getting it started. If it was shown by the media in connectin with the VA. Tech. shootings it was done by the media, not the gun owners.

The instant check info is what is to be destroyed, not form 4473. 4473's are kept forever as pointed out. they are however "Not to be used" except for tracing a gun actually used in a crime. Bloomberg want's to violate this & essentially make them public knowledge for anyone to see I believe.

The media will pounce on any opportunity to press for gun control. The best defence we have is to note that the death toll would have much smaller if the law didn't ban guns at the school. I believe that we may not give another inch of our rights as they are too much erroded as is. Fiight 'em to the end! A Roman military historian wrote: Si vis pacem, para bellum. If you want peace, prepare for war. David

The Romans forgot the above advice, squabbled amongst themselves for the right to be emperor and deified, did not require their citizens to train in arms or join the military and when they were overrun by disorganized barberians, were unable to mount a defence. Of course they knew that there was trouble but the problems could not be repaired in a generation. Rotten at the core. A supine attitude toward life's challenges will get you into pricisely that kind of a fix. This country deserves better than to fall on its face! Our culture deserves to be protected and promoted. Are we losing a sense of what our culture is? There is no center in multiculturism. Lets pull up our socks and promote what is valuable in our culture and let the chips fall where they may. Political Correctness is pernicious and pervasive in our university systems. We should root it out. Stop giving government support to a university that will not allow military recruiting on campus and take away their tax free status. What a diferent tune they would suddenly play! David
