I have a Remington 1882 , very nice but no forend insert. I have another 1882 that I would like to remove the insert and place it in the better one. What is the best way?

doubletrouble: I have removed them before using steam to swell the wood until the adhesive is loose enough to remove the insert. A teapot with a spout works well if your wife will let you use the stove and the teapot..... Best Regards,
Doug

Why not just fit a new piece of horn? Sounds easier to me considering both fore ends were shaped by hand and likely slightly different in shape even if they look the same. Steve

What Steve said. The hard work, removing the wood for the horn, is already done.

Was it Horn or Ebony? I do not know myself, but many guns used Ebony. Small blocks of Ebony are available on Ebay.
Regards Ken
I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.

At the next show you are at, keep your eye open for an old horn buttplate, taken off a European gun. Should be enough material for several, and you won't destroy the second Remington fore end.

There is a fellow in Alaska who sells horn blanks. His name is Joe Dobrzynski. PM me if you want his email address.

Water Buffalo horn which is extremely black and is available as Demonwoolf suggests on ebay. It is used a lot by bow makers here in Britland for making bow nocks as well as other parts, also a good thing it is not heat treated to produce a flat block the horns are naturally long and very dense. Strange thing is it is a by-product of the ever increasing Mozzarella Cheese industry so its cost is quite affordable.
The only lessons in my life I truly did learn from where the ones I paid for!
