Monty, you are a cantankerous soul. Time it was finished you'd would not only be underwater but you'd be at the bottom of the lake.

If you have all, or at least most,of the original stock; by far your best solution is going to be have it repaired, as mentioned above.

Dennis Smith aka The Stock Doctor is an expert at repairing broken stocks. It would be worth talking to him - he is very generous with his time for initial consultations.

If the gun is worth restocking at all you better never get tired of it because will be a money pit of vast proportions. For the sake of argument lets say the gun is worth ten grand. The job will set you back 3500 plus, plus blank. Nobody drops that type of money into a plain blank so figure a real top notch blank will set you back another grand or more.

If you paid ten grand for the gun and then invested another 4500 into restocking it you loose anytime you sell it over the next 20 years. If the gun was worth five grand it might take you twice that time to recover your investment. Look into a repair and if that is not an option have it butt grafted. More than one way to skin a cat or in this case fix a stock.

Better yet, Monty, walk away from the deal if it's not too late.

I'm going to walk away from it but to answer some ones post it is a Cogwell Harrison probably only worth the price the guy is asking if the stock wasn't broken. Joe is right as usual it would become a money pit. It would need to be a bargain!

I like the way KY john put it. The guy wants $5000 now it will cost another $5000 the way my luck has been running lately. Then maybe if I posted it on double gun after Homeless has checked it out I might could get $6000, if Holland and Holland did the stock work.
Life stinks being a poor jeweler . I knew I should have married a stock makers' daughter.

Likely the best deal you will make this year is to walk away from this project. Saved yourself thousands of dollars and many what was I thinking of later self criticism. I wish I had taken the same advise more than once.
