Rather than criticize the engraving as less than high end dollar bill grade stuff look at it in the context of the day it was likely done, the grade of gun, and wear to the metal since done.

Agreed it is after market and not first class, but it does have a primitive likability that appeals to many just as folk art does.

Not my cup of tea but interesting

Yes, an example from the "Pumpkin School" of engraving. Thanks to Chuck H!

If Grand Ma Moses engraved guns, they would look like this. Noted by Geo, the 'Smith is, indeed, the perfect canvas for an exercise like this.

Ted

One thing is certain, it's a whole lot better than I could do!
It's a shame is that it is not from someone in his family who was learning. "Uncle so in so did this in 19xx".

Only way to better your skills is to get in there and do it.
Very cool.

I might as well stir the pot, it is nicer than any Parker or Ithaca engraved gun. At least it looks like a grouse and not a flying turnip.

Well I'm stirred...
I fail to see Ithaca short of the competition. I think they had quail better than their neighbors to the north, but to each their own.

Here are some additional Ithaca turnips. The variety has been identified as the heritage 'Winter McGraw Golden.' Plump, full of rich tangy flavor. AND, you can have your teeth filled with them. Hard to find though.
