If you've ever needed to cover checkering with tape during a refinish job, you've no doubt found masking tape to be of limited help, especially on a pistol grip stock. I just found that Scotch brand duct tape works pretty well. It has better adhesion and enough stretch to cover contours.

Bill, does the gooy adhesive come out of the pattern readily?

Blue painters tape works ok. I put it on overlapping the edges of the checkering and gently cut it with an exacto knife. Have one drying as I type.

I'd be interested in hearing if you have problems with the adhesive on duct tape. I tried duct tape once and had big problems getting the goo out of the checkering. On the other hand, I have used Scotch brand masking tape to cover checkering for over 40 years with no problems.
I recently tried blue painters tape and it worked well, but it seemed kind of thin when compared to masking tape, so was more careful when sanding around it than I am with the masking tape.

Try using two or three layers. It's lack of residue is hard to beat. A layer of blue tape with a layer of metal HVAC tape also works real well. You can also try aluminum foil and rubber cement. I prefer the Blue/HVAC combo. NEVER use metal HVAC tape directly on wood unless a refinish is planned. It's too sticky, but it's great if you need to mask off metal.

Ken, there are two flavors of blue masking tape. I don't understand why but one is much thinner than the other and smoother. Not sure which would be better for the job, but try them both.

Ken,

What is metal HVAC tape, and where do you find it?

Thanks.

It's the tape commonly used on heating ducts. You can usually find it at any hardware store. I buy mine at Theisen's. It looks like a regular roll, but it has waxed paper backing you peel off as you unroll the tape.

Terry, there was some residue left when I removed the duct tape. I scrubbed it with paint thinner and a toothbrush which removed most of it. The checkering needs to be touched up anyway, and that will take care of ant remaining adhesive. I'll try something else next time.
