Hello there: I have come upon an O/U that befuddles me. It is an in-the-white O/U marked Pedersen Custom Gun Co. I am all but certain that it was built by Beretta for this division of Mossberg some time ago. In researching the Pedersen name, I did determine that guns were built in Spain and Italy. Seems that SxS, pumps and a few O/U guns were produced. This Pedersen division had nothing to do with the Pedersen that was a rifle builder and made tools. I have inquiries into both Beretta and Mossberg in an attempt to learn more about this gun. So far the silence is deafening. Can anyone throw any light on this O/U and am I correct in the possibility that guns in-the-white were available for custom finish by this branch of Mossberg or other custom makers? In other words---What gives here???? Best, John

Hey John, Good to see you around. According to my Blue Book, they were a division of O.F. Mossberg circa 1973-1975. They basically had 2 o/u models the 1500 and 1000. The 1000 had 2 grades. Each was available as hunting, trap or skeet for a total of 9 offerings. So you are correct. Doubt many people at Mossberg are still there from the 1975. Nothing about in the white offerings, perhaps one the never made it to the bluing tanks before they closed their doors? I am sure one else will fill in more details. Pete

Thanks Pete: Since I posted, I have learned a lot more. The Pedersen Company out of New York made golf clubs, rifles and shotguns. It was bought by Mossberg in an attempt to slide into a higher end market. Seems that the first and most common product was this O/U that was built by Beretta and to be finished in the Mossberg custon shop. In house engraving as well as any other custom work could be ordered. The least expensive engraved model was priced at $975 and that was in 1973. This division of Mossberg lasted only for the two years--- Nov. 19th,1972-1975. I had a grand chat with the Mossberg historian, Mr. Victor Harlin who was very familiar with the guns and has written the definitive tome on Mossberg. There is a small chapter on the Pedersen effort. His opinion is that this gun was not sold by Mossberg but was most likely passed to a writer, salesman or some such and was inadvertantly let out into the field. As it appears to be pristine I feel fortunately to have acquired it and will see what I can do about having it engraved and colored as a presentation piece. If any has experience with these guns, please share those anecdotes with us. BTW---They had SxSs in the line up as well. Best, John

John:
There were 2 basic o/u models as Pete stated. The 1500 which was built in Spain by Aramberri. And the 1000 which was built by Beretta. The 1500 was pretty much a Perazzi copy and is the grandfather to the Kemen KM-4 as well as a dead ringer for the AYA MD-2. I own a model 1500 that I picked up at an auction several years ago for not much money. I've been trying to find out about info on the gun since there's so little that's out there.
The 1000 I don't know much about other than it was a re-badged Beretta. I hope this helps some.

It was not a cheap gun in '73. You could buy a VW beetle for about that at the time. If you complete it, you have to post before and after pictures. Pete

Still sniffing this gun out !!!! Not being well versed in things O/U, or Beretta for that matter, wonder what the Beretta model would have been. Anyone venture to educate me??? Best, John PS--If it means anything, the gun has a raised rib that is about 5/16th in width and nicely matted. This is the Pedersen mod.1000.

Correction on VW Prices. In Charleston,WV a 1973 VW Beetle was $1995.00. In 1971 at the same dealership a Beetle was $1700.00 with the AM/FM radio. $1600.00 without Radio.

John, considering the years you are mentioning, it is probably a Beretta S-57. In 1971 I got my first double and the rather newly engineered Beretta O/Us were just out (if I remember right).

John, does it look like this one? This is a S-57E (for Engraving). JC(AL)
