Interesting about Vietnamese comming in from the Eastern side,West Germany also brought in some Vietnamese "boat people", while I was there on my second tour. I remember seeing some of the children walking home from school in Munnerstadt. After our shameful pullout, I was happy to see some children were able to escape and have a chance for a good life.

Mike, you are right! Interesting, that they came from both sides.

Interesting to read of the situation in Cz in 1945:

Just find this site, maybe these guys can give you the information you want.

His headquarters then where still in Germany, Regensburg, near the Czech. border: "We had a 250 mile drive to Pilsen on Sunday morning and stopped at the HQ of Patton. Third Army in Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany. This was the location of his final combat HQ and as military governor."

Thank you! Regensburg bovaria is a possibility. i have been tracking down my family to understand this colonel in my family to pinpoint if he was a staffer for patton, or in another division.
My father said he was at the headquarters there but they had to pack it up because they crossed the line eisenhower told him not to do. they were actually 10 miles from prague before some divisions turned back.
I hope it is as simple as patton's final headquarters/castle.

so far i found his ss#, his service number, and which boat he went to europe on. that is all i could find today.

is there an old map of this bohemian area around the 1830-1850 area? i know that before world war 1 there were different dukes and lineages that controlled different parts of this country.
im wondering if i can find the original owner.

many thanks gunwolf! this is proving to be a fascinating story

I was just outside Pilsen last Summer for a short visit. There are a couple of Pilsen museums that should have pertinent information.

Patton Memorial Pilsen

www.patton-memorial.cz

West Bohemian Museum

www.zcm.cz

I am rather confident that they have a list of items missing from the nearby castles after Patton's men paid a visit therein.

With kind regards,
Jani

Ok so after taking a little bit of a break I decided to see what I could find about the gunsmith. It seems everything is around the Resenburg area.

According to this link missilieur auction

Johann Baptiste Missillieur, a native of Vienne (south of Lyon), was active in Vienna and Prague circa 1781-1835. He is recorded master in Vienna in 1821 and in the Prague Guild in 1834. Another Girandoni system by this maker is preserved in the Danish Hunting and Forestry Museum, Hørsholm (no. 1170). Five double flintlock guns by this maker decorated with the arms of Duke Maximillian Josef are recorded in the former gunroom of the Dukes Palatine of Zweibrücken, circa 1795. See A. Hoff 1972, p. 73 and T. Hempe 1911, p. 413.
£3000-5000

so evidently Duke Maximillian Josef has close ties with this guy if he has "5" of these firearms.

Duke Maximillian Josef Wiki

is from the house of Wittelsbach

interesting enough that lands him during that time in the Rhennish Palatinate

And what does this region look like for an uneducated american who knows nothing of this area?

....and where was Patton's last headquarters?

Regensburg.

So i am pretty confident that it narrows things down CONSIDERABLY and we are in the ballpark.
I just find it interesting both from the smith's point of view, and how this was acquired that they line up.

Thanks to gunwolf for his ideas on this possibility and his sleuthing!

thoughts?

Interesting that the auction brief notes he was from Vienne, France being South of Lyon. I wonder how much weight that holds?

Kind Regards,
