Try using two or three layers. It's lack of residue is hard to beat. A layer of blue tape with a layer of metal HVAC tape also works real well. You can also try aluminum foil and rubber cement. I prefer the Blue/HVAC combo. NEVER use metal HVAC tape directly on wood unless a refinish is planned. It's too sticky, but it's great if you need to mask off metal.
