What happens when we add the Nitros, etc. to the Ithaca total? Would the number propel them past the Smith gun, Fultons and Hunters included?

dblfever,
Nice find! He must be selling off an estate. Look at some of the other very nice sxs guns he has up at the moment.
Ithaca advertising was consistent for many years, they kept hammering away at lock time. Always stating how important it was and that Ithaca was the fastest. They even had it measured at a university. Interesting no competitor ever disputed them.
I agree with Greg. They went for the common user. They seemed to have understood early on about having multiple sales outlets. Their guns appeared in many catalogs.

The only reason to make high grade guns is that they have higher profits per gun. Ithaca seemed to reason that a few high grades were nice as long as they made enough low grades and they certainly did make a lot of them. High grade guns were advertisments for them as much as profit centers. Who else named a high grade after one of its' buyers? A famous band leader at that, who is still famous, almost a hundred years later.

Michael Jackson has sold millions of records - that hardly means he is the best or even doesn't suck.

I guess I wasn't even thinking numbers, how about did Ithaca make the best graded guns? Without looking for exact comparisons this grade 4 looks about as good as other makers much higher graded guns to me....

Jeez, you had a good discussion going about my favorite guns and you had to bring Michael Jackson into it. This cuts deep, especially if you really appreciate Ithaca guns.

"Best" is always a tough call. It implies better than all others; doubt you can substantiate that. I'll agree that Ithaca made a good value product that sold well. I'll agree that NID's are tough as nails. I'm amazed that it is possible to decorate a NID frame in such a way as to make it aesthetically pleasing other than in the blocky, robust, easy to make way of the basic NID. For whatever reason, the market doesn't value Ithacas as highly as some others - good for buyers and bad for sellers (the market always has two sides).
I'd go for "as good as was ever practically needed."

A couple of Ithaca ads. This one from 1912. Emphasis on the lock time: A distinctly Ithaca approach here. No special order gun, but directing the customer to a regular production model. It has to be the only ad campaign that I have ever seen that associates health benefits from using a particular brand or shotgun. From 1922: Pete
