Your choice. The English guns look browned, but the American imports look like they were blacked. If it had had a straight stock, I'd have for certain gone for the Brown. As an import, black would probably be more like original.

This gun is possibly another example of nice, mid-grade Birmingham hammerguns imported before the 1890 Tariff. Once the tariff was put in place many importers were eventually forced to switch to lower cost Belgian guns in order to maintain the same price point. Just like the "W Richards" line of Trade Name guns imported by Folsom.
