At least the barrels look like they're nearly ready for rebrowning/blacking.

I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.

Agree with Miller on the 1887 or later date based on 12 over C. (Also, isn't marked Not For Ball.) The Birmingham view mark on that gun ceased being used in 1904 (after which you also would have had the shot charge). So that narrows it down to 1887-1904.

Great info!!! Thank you!!
Bores measure .708-.710" and it looks like the chambers handle brass cases. Refinish of the barrels is planned. Black or Brown??

Your choice. The English guns look browned, but the American imports look like they were blacked. If it had had a straight stock, I'd have for certain gone for the Brown. As an import, black would probably be more like original.

This gun is possibly another example of nice, mid-grade Birmingham hammerguns imported before the 1890 Tariff. Once the tariff was put in place many importers were eventually forced to switch to lower cost Belgian guns in order to maintain the same price point. Just like the "W Richards" line of Trade Name guns imported by Folsom.

"Normally" chamber dimensions are identical regardless whether the gun was inteded for Brass or Paper hulls. Those made especially for use with brass cases usually have an oversize bore as the walls of brass cases are thinner than paper ones & call for oversize wads.
The gun I mentioned with the prw 1887 marks is not marked "Not For Ball" either, but it is cylinder bored in both barrels so that mark would not have applied.

What's the general opinion on a realistic value of a gun like the one Bob J. has pictured?

Thanks.

This is what Englishmen often call cheap & cheerful Ironmonger gun which Americans often call Hardware store gun.

OK,the gun , to me, does not look like a gun made off of the Continent. Remember in the early pinfire and centerfire days, there were English marked guns which originated on the Continent. That warped sideplate seems like a giveaway.
