Don't have this gun in my hands yet, but wondering if someone can help with the marks. Nitro marked on edge of both barrels. Wondering about the mark above U with Crown. Its a 30" 16ga hammer gun.

Imperial Eagles and when coupled with NITRO notes post 1912(Suhl), when there was a rules change. Very curious if a H surmounted by a Star is present on the underside of both tubes between the flats & forend hanger.

gloftness,
The crown U is the mark for the "view" proof, which is a detailed inspection, usually after the definitive proof. The 16 in a circle means it is chambered for 16 ga 65mm( 2 1/2-2 9/16") shells rather than current standard 2 3/4".If the "nitro" you mentioned is written in script, the gun was likely proofed in Zella-Mehlis,if block letters-then Suhl.It would have likely been made in or around the town in which the proof house was located.

Mike and Raimey,
Thanks much for the help. I wanted a hammer gun and this one just seemed awfully nice. Here are some photos of it. I am thinking about 1930 vintage, but have no way of knowing. I'm anxious to shoot it at some clays. I've got great soft 3/4 and 7/8 oz loads.

I think it is from between the wars unless there's a date stamp on the tubes forward of the flats.

You can just make out that the "Nitro" is in block letters so Suhl. That's a nice double, congratulations!

The gun is likely dated. We may be able to see it if you post photos of all the markings under the barrels.

Well, got this gun in my hands today and was able to shoot it a bit. I'm very happy with it. Here are some more photos of the markings. I'm curious as to what they mean:

Post 1912 & pre-1923 with constriction in both tubes. Looks like several mechanics contributed some and the script Hs just forward of the flats may be for a Hengelhaupt

Raimey- Thanks for your help on this. I am very pleased with the quality and fit of the gun. Shoots well, but chokes are very tight. .038 and .028".

I was wondering if it might be a 1929 since the fore end just has 875 stamped and thought maybe the 29 prefix was the year (s/n 29875). What would Hengelhaupt mean?

My 16ga 7/8oz target load is 7600psi. I'm assuming this should be no problem with a "NITRO" marked barrel?
