Hotrack-

"Smooth bore rifle" would be an oxymoron in the US. Smooth bore did come first no doubt, and we referred to them as muskets or fowlers depending on the design for the intended use. If the bore was rifled, here it would have been called a rifle or a rifled musket to distinguish the rifled muskets from the smooth bore counterparts.

I'm of the same thinking as Miller; don't let this give you a 'melvin'. (but, bore would be appropriate 'merican with .410)

... and this goes for everyone when in the U.S. ... be careful who you call your "mate" over here. Utterwise you could meet some really friendly fellas...you know ... don't ask, don't tell.

And I have only one mate, and she's gonna be my only mate, if I have anything to say about it.

We may have won our independence, but the U.S. populace seems to have an incredible appetite for anything British. Why else would anyone put up with an automobile with Lucas electrics or put on heavy tweeds to wander about humid mid-Atlantic sporting clays courses?!? There is also a practically morbid fascination with the British Royal Family. Poor Paris Hilton has to work so hard to stay in the limelight, while the British Royals stay there just going about their daily business!

Does not "gauge" designate the size of the "bore"?

Another example, "inches" designates the inside diameter of "pipe". Thus when we refer to one-inch pipe, we know what size we are refering to.

Bore vs Gauge, boils down to 4 letters vs 5. And just a titch harder to misspell.

Lots of bigger issues to worry about.
