The shells were likely loaded with metric size shot and labeled with the closest American size.I doubt that the World will fall down.Anyway it is very hard to measure such small shot. They are not likely to be precisely round, and the 1-40 screw in a mic. has the power to deform soft lead shot. Mike

But if you measure out an ounce of lead and then count the pellets in that ounce it is very accurate.
I am glad to be here.

But Stallones described "mikeing?" the shot. Mike

Using my mike there is no deformation. It has a very easy "clip clutch" mechanism that prevents putting enough force on the spindle to deform lead shot. No, they aren't precisely round, but if you take enough measurements and average them you come up with an accurate enough measurement.
I bought 12 flats of the RIO 7 1/2s recently, and have used another 15-16 of them in the last year. Never miked any, but if they measure as you say, Leighton, I'm glad I bought the 7 1/2s and not the 8s. I really like the RIOs, having used them on doves and targets for the last year and a half.

The birds I shoot are all so dumb they can't tell any difference between .09 shot and .095 shot. They just fall dead.

I used my mike (Micrometer), actually I used two to check each other to measure several pellets of each. When shooting Clays I believe I can tell a difference between real 7 1/2s and 8s.. Stan, what do you think? Of course under about 35 yds it does not make much difference. I also like Rios a lot, but will make sure I have "7 1/2s"

Well, I believe that 7 1/2s will break rabbits and battues more reliably, and until I read this thread I would have sworn that your 35 yard rule would be pretty accurate. However, now that I realize I have been shooting 8s, that I thought were 7 1/2s, and I think back on how well they have been breaking some long stuff for me for the last year and a half, I wonder. Not saying it doesn't, just saying I need to regroup my thinking. First thing I'm gonna do is break open one of my 1 oz. and one of my 1 1/8 oz. RIO loads and mike the shot to see if mine are that way. Got the flu right now, but maybe tomorrow I will feel like doing it. Will post back after I do. Another thing tho', I might not be the best person to evaluate that difference. As you may remember, I shoot tighter than normal chokes at clays, so when I hit one I put more shot on the bird than normal, which may be misleading. My two serious clays guns are the MX-8, choked .020" and .020", and the old BSS which is choked .018" and .018". Thanks for posting about this. SRH

Stan (stan and i shot together in the U S Open SxS in 2010) I noticed you were breaking the tgts soundly. However , I was shooting IC/IC in my cashmore, which is what I normally shoot. There is no doubt the tighter chokes help break tgts with smaller shot.

It's just a personal thing for me, Leighton. I am the only one of my large group of sporting clay shooting buddies who doesn't swap chokes. My barrels aren't even threaded. Everyone should shoot what gives them the best chance of breaking the most birds. Hope I feel like measuring the shot tomorrow. You've got my curiosity up. SRH
