Here's a couple of shots of Jerry Liles' 1903. It has been a fun project. Had to do some searching to find all the appropriate parts, but we found them. And except for when we were both bidding on the same trap butt plate on eBay, it all went well.

Regarding the scope on the Highwall, I have two custom rifles on original flat spring actions. I could not bring myself to drill the actions for a scope base. Both of them have Talley bases on the barrel. One is a .30-40 half octagon barrel and it has flat bases. That rifle has a 2.5X Lyman Alaskan scope that I find just perfect. The second rifle is a 225 Win with a light contour round barrel. My smith made custom Talley bases for the barrel and I fitted a vintage Lyman All-Weather 4X. Both scopes have perfect eye relief and stock height for me and the breeches and hammers are very accessible without scope interference.

Egad, Stephen, lever pin not blued??? Oxpho blue and a q-tip--done! Looks way better than my Low wall that went into the case hardening furnace, in a pipe chamber that turned out to have a hairline crack. Too dark! Getting better as it ages, tho.

Hope to finish the M70 I was doing, has been at the checker which has taken more time then I thought.
This is the new project.

Want to build a mid range off hand rifle probably for the 40-60 Maynard cartridge.

Hi Steven,
what a nicely balanced High Wall you have achieved there.
I tried to get over the problem of a modern scope on a High Wall like this.
I suppose its ok but not sure if its the result I wanted.
The rifle is an early flat spring action chambered for a standard 303 case necked down to 22.[/img] [/img]

Nero,
Nice looking rifle, I'd enjoy seeing more pics. The craftsmanship looks excellent and I'll bet the cartridge is a screamer…

The problems scoping a High Wall are alway the same.
Not enough clearance between the hammer and the scope, especially with the adjustment ring, yes you can make it work, but not conveniently and with questionable safety. The hammer is the safety. That is especially important because the High Wall leaves the hammer cocked. (and please don't anyone say to put a cockeyed spur on it, it does't work on these action)

The eye relief is rarely correct if the rear mount isn't on top of the action, especially with a variable power scope. That Burris must have a yard of relief…

Look closely at mine, where the rear mount is and why it's an older Leupold fixed with long eye relief. I took a newer variable off of it because the adjustment ring was in the way, the turret hit the rear ring and the relief still wasn't perfect.

Hi Steven, as requested here's a photo I took some time ago when it had a Swarovski 8 x 56 scope on it.
Used to use it for head shots on rabbits for the pot at dusk.

This was whilst I was living in England and a friend had a farm close to me and in England, dusk or twilight goes on for quite a long time and the big scope helped to see them, if you don't go for a head shot you lose too much meat.
Could never get closer than a hundred yards and a lot of the shots were out to one fifty.
In NZ not many rabbits around the area I now live but we do have wild Turkeys. Again head shots. You either hit them or a complete miss. You can't get close to these birds either.
The idea behind this cartridge in this rifle was that you have to have a rimmed case and 303 cases are everywhere and its something like a 220 Swift, very flat shooting.
