If you re-cut the checking which will repair the damage and clean the channels, then brush a light coat of EEZOX or light oil on the fresh cut checkering, IT WILL NOT look new, but will look clean and neat and period and undamaged while still matching the rest of the wood.........

Otherwise I would just leave it as is.
