Gentlemen, I have a Parker VH with 28" barrels, SN #206040. Someone had shortened the stock then lengthened it with wood incorrect in too many ways. I have found appropriate wood to redo the job and want to get the butt plate correct. Would the original butt plate have been one with a spur or would it have been a flat plate? What recoil pad would be appropriate for a gun of this age (1923) in case I decide to go that route? Thanks you much, Michael http://www.archcarving.com

The Galazan Silvers-style looks great and comes in both 1" and 1 1/2" if you need more LOP. http://www.connecticutshotgun.com I like the Brownells London Guns English-Style Recoil Pad Item # 535-300-100 (large) It has more 'give' than the Silvers. The Pachmayr Old English D752 doesn't look quite as 'age appropriate' but definitely absorbs recoil and comes as thin as .6". Check http://www.brownells.com

Michael, your VH could have had either a dog's head butt plate (DHBP) with or without the spur, and there were several variations of both. If you have, or can borrow, a copy of "The Parker Story", there's a very informative section on Parker Brothers butt plates which should answer your questions.
Many Parkers of grade VH and above had recoil pads originally installed at the factory. Doc Drew's post above has some good info.

If you are making a new stock, use a butt plate rather than a pad. Parkers always seem to be worth more with a plate than with a pad, and they look better too. I think the 1923 guns had no spur, but someone on the PGCA BBS can give you the scoop on that. If you can't find a suitable original plate, use a repro until you can find an original that fits. If you must have a pad, I think the Silvers-types look best, and they are readily avalable.

You could always use skeleton steel buttplate off a higher grade gun, and when someone questions it you just smile and say, "With Parkers, never say never!" That will fix their wagon.

London guns is out of business, I think. Brownell ran out of one size a while back and is probably out of both sizes by now. Oh, well.
