I would appreciate others comments on this. It was very frustrating to discover this.
A friend of mine mentioned last week that he has checked the shot sized of Rio and Kemen and they were not as described. He said the 7 1/2s miked out at .09 which is an 8 instead of a 7 1/2 which is .095. I came home and did the same . I took a box of Rio 71/2s and took shot out and checked it. It miked out at .09 which is the American # 8 size. I also miked an American Brand 7 1/2 and it came out at .095 which is right for a 7 1/2 . SO, it appears that Rio and Kemen are loading both their 7 1/2s with 8 shot. I have also checked Rio # 8 shot, and they mike .085 which is the American # 8 1/2 size.

It would seem that our shot sizes only apply to shells loaded here. I know British #6s and #7s are different than American shot. I had thought the rest were fairly similar. Maybe not?

I have flats of 16ga and 20ga B&P in shot size 3.....I get funny looks from some hunting buddies until I explain that their size 3 is about a US size 4...and that's my favorite phez load.....after explaining I just get a puzzled look from them...

Brit 6's, at about 270/oz (compared to US 6 @ 225 and 7 1/2 @ 350) are a nice in between size. Work well for pheasants over good dogs and for prairie grouse. That's the standard shot size you'll see on a driven shoot, unless it's one of those that features extremely "tall" birds.

I believe that Rio is now loaded in TX, I do not know the source of their shot. The Argentine shot I have used tends to be a touch small in size 9. It is great for skeet

I have finished measuring the Shot Sizes in Rio, Kemen, Federal and Fiocchi. I have miked the 7 1/2 and 8s of each. Rio and Kemen 7 1/2s mike .009 which is # 8 diameter Their 8s mike .085 which is # 8 1/2 diameter Fiocchi and Federal 7 1/2s mike .094 which is near .095 for 71/2s and their 8s measure .090. Why Rio and Kemen ( both loaded by Rio) want to use undersize shot and misleading labeling is another mystery.

I would bet they are using import shot. Import shot prices are based on LME prices. The London Metal Exchange is where the world extablishes prices for common metals. U S prices are normally higher.

That is my guess also. Rio is in Spain and I think the shot towers are there also and they use what they want to use to load for us.

Shot sizes in foreign made shells are always a crap shoot. You can always ask the importer, but they don't always have the right answer. I was shooting B&P's a few years ago, and discovered they'd switched from US shot sizes to Italian shot sizes. No big deal if you know about it, but it's really nice to know. Cut one open. Measure the pellets or do a count.
