I have in front of me an Italian boxlock SXS 16ga.
On the barrel flats are stamped as best as I can decipher the following:
Acier Special
Nickel Chrome
Manufacture Nat. d'Armes
and the letters MAC in a diamond
Anyone shed some light on this gun?
A fellow was asking if I would trade some work for it.
It is in Excellent condition.
What might it be worth?
Thank you

It is French. Can you provide some pics of the marks?

If my guess is correct not a whole lot. Google Manufacture d'Armes de Chatellerault.

OK so I am thinking about offering $300.00 worth of work for this gun.
I see one sold on Gunauction for $300 and another forum a guy saw one in a gun shop for $300
I like 16ga's Have a fully restored 16ga 1910 Field Grade LC Smith done by Buck Hamlin and a Fox Sterlingworth 16ga so this would be a good rainy day shooter.

MAC is pretty much bottom of the barrel where French guns are concerned. If "excellent condition" means it's tight (no wobble in the barrels with the forend off) and no pits in the bores, it should be worth $300.

One other issue would be chamber length. If the chambers are 2 1/2" (good chance on a French 16), you've got an ammunition problem. It will probably handle 2 3/4" 1 oz loads from Win/Rem/Fed, but you probably won't like the recoil. If you don't plan to shoot it much, order a flat of 2 1/2" shells from RST. They sell both 7/8 and 3/4 oz loads as well as 1 oz. Not much more expensive than buying the cheapest 16's you can find at your neighborhood big box or sporting goods store.

I have an old MAC 16 SXSW, it is a plain utility shotgun but handles well and I like. Mine has some sort of high chromium content steel (an early stainless ?) And the finish is a paint.

Mine's a tale that can't be told, my freedom I hold dear.
