Just two:
Ruger #1 .458 WinMag, with a Burris fixed 3.5X, Chinese CZ clone .22 bolt action trainer with open sights.
I love them both, but I don't shoot the .458 much! I learned from my time with my college small bore rifle team that one can consume massive amounts of ammunition using a single shot as the round is loaded directly from the box to the firearm (no time wasted fiddling with a magazine). I also have a single shot Colt Camp Perry handgun.

Although I might be know around here for double gun work, the largest part of my custom gunmaking has always been single shot rifles. Here are a few: A High wall Express rifle in .45-70 (original action) A Low Wall Winchester in .25-20 (original action) Close-up of same with Michael Dubber engraving Another Low Wall .22lr, gopher shooting. Bill Gamradt engraved A Dakota #10 in .257 Roberts Close up with Dubber engraving and propriatary trigger guard And my own hunting rifle, a Ruger sidelever conversion .30-40 Krag in Namibia

How 'bout a Whitney No.1 Sporting Rifle (rolling block) circa 1880's, the chamber was horribly corroded (.38/40 Remington-Hepburn)... Relined the 28" octagon barrel to .38/55 Ballard (Winchester).

Those are great!!I Think my next purchase is either going to be a Ruger #1 Customized to shoot the .50-110 Express or the .45-90 or a Shiloh sharps in .45-90. Mr. Hughes what would it take to convert a Ruger #1 to a Takedown with extra barrels? I realize the ejecter is a problem unless you stay with rimmed cases, or Rimless cases in the gun you can not shoot both in the same gun.

Jeff, To the best of my knowledge, takedown doesn't work for the Ruger #1 because of the forend hanger. IMO your better off with a Sharps in the big blackpowder catridges because of weight (or lack of) issues. I'm booked up for custom projects. Here's a Hagn action reconfigured and in process. Before And after. 280 cal.

Now that Hornady is going to load 9,3x74, I might get me one of them Strum und Ruger Numero Unos in that caliber. Matter of fact, I nearly bought one in .404R-lessNEJ. That 9,5x73 bolt gun needs a "mate".

I've built up 3 or 4 single shots based on actions that I bought, and I have 4 or 5 slowly underway...but I'm losing my eyesight and my sense of touch at the same time...I can never get rid of my home made sweethearts, but I can't start any new projects 'til I finish the ones I've started...That being said, I have a spare Westley Richards magnum Martini action that I will never get to... along with several other project guns and parts...I know there is a "guns for sale" section somewhere on this BBS, but what about parts and actions? Are they allowed to be listed or is there some special rule for gunsmithing items and project guns? What can be listed and what can't? Is it limited to doubles or can I list a single shot?

Any British falling block projects Robert? How large is the Martini action? The same as was used for the Greener shotguns? I have a client looking for a Martini action large enough to chamber a 20 bore on. Steve

I like the .405 Winchester Cartridge myself! Even more so when you consider the fact that the Greatest President of These United states, to date any way, figured it was one of the best Cartridges produced,Teddy Roosevelt Himself!!!

Ruger #1's in 22 Hornet, 7x57, 30-06, 375H&H, 458 Win, and a 1885 Browning BPCR in 45-70. I am hoping someday to acquire a Schuetzen style in either 32-40, or 38-55.

SKB...just the Westley Richards Martini, not a Greener cousin, this one is Westley down to the ground... like the WR's pictured in the DGJ (minus engraving) with the big safety lever that looks like an old motorcycle suicide shifter ... . Doesn't look as if it's wide enough for a 20ga

Ruger 1s can be lovely, especially those worked over by Heym of Munnerstadt. I would not mind finding "Plain Jane" Modell 30 in 9,3x74R. Mucho gusto!

I have four and wish I had room and $$ for more: a custom Ruger 1A in .22 Hornet, a Lo-Wall in .25-20WCF (made up from about 7 different rifles and some homemade and aftermarket parts--shoots great but not quite up to Mr. Hughes' cosmetic standards...), an NEF "Sportster" in .22WRM (I bought a factory replacement wood buttstock and forend to replace the plastic, expected "pallet grade" and they sent me the nicest fiddleback birch buttstock you have ever seen! Gun shoots 'way above it's price range, too.) and a Savage 220 16-bore with a spare 219 .25-20 WCF barrel I found in a "barrel of barrels" in an old gunshop in Maine. Tried finding a 219 barrel in ANY caliber recently?
I didn't get in on the "stalking rifle" discussion of the .25-20 WCF but will throw in my two bits. When I was a kid in Northern California in the '40s and '50s (before it became the "Wine Country," yuck) we used to shoot deer with whatever was legal and many ranches had .25-20s. You need to wait until you are very close and have a broadside shot to get both lungs. This requires more discipline and more time out in deer country than most people have nowadays but it worked for country people who lived among MANY small blacktail deer and could wait for the right shot. Now you need at least a .243 or some of the same discipline and time and a .223 with "deer bullets." The deer are still there--they just love suburbs and vineyards...
I use all of my single shots for woodchuck hunting in upstate New York and find that the two .22s are more reliable woodchuck killers. With the .25-20 you need to get closer and hit a vital spot; basically you need to act like you are shooting at big game.

Remington rolling block in 50-70 govt and another in 8x58RD, both Swedes. Oh and an NEF in .17 HMR which is a whole lot of fun considering its price point.
Looking for a nice Snider Enfield at the moment.

I killed several whitetails with a .22 Long Rifle, and even killed one with a stick. THat does not mean it is a good idea. Just like the .22 LR, the .25-20 is a small game round. Period. People can pull little stunts all they want, but that does not make it smart.
BTW-no, I will not divulge any details of the deer mentioned. It was a long time ago in a different world and under different circumstances.

Marc, the 25-20 is deer legal in many states. ...but who cares(not that I don't take your word on the subject - I don't), but I've only shot crows and toothy varmints with it. The Fraser rifle came out of the north of England by a well-known collector/seller of Frasers. Due to the lack of the 250 cartridge, the rifle was re-barreled to 25-20. The old English vicar, by his accounts did shoot his fair share of roedeer with the pip-squeak round.

Legality of the cartridge has no bearing on whether or not it is a smart and humane way to kill a whitetail. If you surveyed 100 people I bet you might be able to find one who could give an example of a law in this country that was not a good move on the part of the government.
The largest roe I have killed may have run 45#if he just finished eating and it was pouring rain on him and he had his full winter coat. And this was in far southern England where they are larger than their northern kin. Please tell me how well it worked for you on some of the roe you have shot.
And please re-read my post where I said it could be done, but it was not a smart move.
Sorry for the rant, but I took your post as rather snotty, which is far different then I normally see your posts. If it was not menat as such, then pretend I did not write the above verbage. If you were trying to be snotty, then please read the above verbage again.

Actually, what I'd like is one of those Stevens Favorites from Headrick's article a couple issues back! I've been looking for one (not of that quality) but most of the ones I've found have been pretty used up. What should one expect to pay for a decent shooter?

To get back on the subject, I started off with a Highwall in .219 Wasp, then came the first of many #1's(now 9), found the rarest of all, a .577 Highwall, then became entranced with the Farquharson's (now 4), and plummeted into the depths further by discovering Alex Henrys (4). The devil will have me for sure if a decent Fraser shows itself. ................but they do offer a quiet satisfaction and hours spent in research. .....Every bit as bad as those double rifles that are in competition for my time. ~Arctic~

My Father picked up this oldGerman Single shot stalking rifle about 2 years ago.I Hunted on the web, called all over god's green earth looking for what it was. Finaly found out it was a 8.15x46R chamber. Even found a set of scope rings for it. it had it's own weird mount's on the gun. He had paid $125.00 for it, NO I am not kidding!! I told him if he didn't want it I would take it, After all the call's & hours on the internet, as I told him I wanted it he said sorry sold it about a week earlier. For $750.00..... Wish I had Known he was even considering selling it!!! Since that we have a arrangement, if he buy's a new gun I get to see it, if it is something I might possibly someday maybe want I tell him Right away!!

All the best Treblig, I'm pretty sure the six-man American team shot three Remington RBs and three Sharps. The Irish team lost the match when one of their shooters shot the wrong target by mistake!
