The rib inscription says it's by E. A. Merkel, not the usual Gebruder Merkel. I think your 88% condition description is overly optimistic. Still a nice gun, however.

1armybrat, It is interesting that you have the "capture" or "bring back" papers. We seldom have the firsthand story of how a gun came to the US.Is the Vet that brought it back still living? Did he tell you the story? Also, it would be helpful if you post photos of the markings under the barrels. Mike

1army' Thats pretty sweet mate. I wouldn't hazard a guess at it's %,but it looks to be in pretty nice shape...if it all locks up good, n the bbls are of good wall thickness & all is ship shape,it would be a very nice shooter. Value, ....Its gotta be worth $2000 ...???? The engraving is kinda funky/charming...in pic 7 & 8 view able here, I love those clouds of smoke coming out the bbls...if thats what they are. Never seen that before. So what did you pay, if I may be so bold? Are you gonna keep it as a shooter?..good luck with it man cheers franc

Franc, do you think it looks a bit buffed-perhaps to get some rust off it ?Also that screw on the lever looks like ed was working on it.I thought 8-1100 as estimate due to condition.

In my field of guns it's not so unusual to have bring back papers I deal in German wwii guns and most of the guns in my collection have bring back papers. But it does add a certain cool factor to the piece.

Dave, A lot of them did come that way, but I would guess not the "crap game" if the papers have the vet's name on it.BTW I have a couple that had the forearms removed before they were turned in, and 3 that were buried or hidden in a hay pile to keep them away from being turned in.I rebuilt one of the drillings and the other had a lot of the engraving filed/polished off, to remove pits. There were several pre-war Merkels in the Suhl region. An old Suhl gunmaker told me there were Merkel cousins, brothers, etc. all with their own little shops, and then the House of Merkel has been around since 1898+/-. Gabruder Merkel, Bernhardt Merkel, E.A. Merkel, and more.
