Drew- I find that a loader is too much trouble when passing the second gun in a woodcock cover when I can barely swing the first gun anyway ;-)

wonder if the Archduke should have taken it as an omen and stayed in the house for a year or two

as for the cocking both hammers - i guess I should consider myself luck to have a mitt that can reach both spurs comfortably

my first couple year hunting as a kid were with a single barrel exposed hammer 20 gauge. My father had drilled safety into me since I had been going along unarmed at the age of eight, but he still watched the gun's readiness. BUT - that gun had a hammer spring that must have been meant for leaf on a 2 ton truck, shooting it at all was a miracle for a kid.

The last person who had a loaded gun next to Archduke Franz Ferdinand was on the 28 June 1914 at Sarajevo he did not drop it and did not miss either assassinating him and his wife this event being one of many that triggered the “Great War”. Yes he should have stayed at home!

Decocking one of those hammer singles was a real trick too. Break it open first, then you had to chase down the shell because they eject unfired as well as fired shells. Decock without opening, easy to slip and have it go off by accident. Just looking at the position of a hammer is an easy way to tell whether the gun is "on safe". However, were I to start a youngster, I'd go with a single shot that has a tang safety, like a double. And, of course, stress safe handling. Gun on safe vs off doesn't necessarily guarantee it won't go off if it's dropped, shooter trips and falls, etc. But a tang safety is much easier for a youngster to operate.

Talking doubles, broken open and cocked only works if you're walking relatively open cover. If you're walking in brush or heavy grass, it's very easy to get crud in the action. Good chance the gun won't even close completely, let alone fire.

"A loader fell while holding two guns and both discharged, just missing the Archduke". What a pity.

Jed Clampett clearly cocks his hammer as he raises his gun to shoot at some food, which of course causes the issuance of famed bubblin' crude. If it's good enough for Jed, I reckon it's good enough for just about anyone.

I always felt that cocking the hammers slowly and deliberately just as I passed the dog was safer than thumbing them back in the "heat of the moment" when mounting the gun.

Plus I really like that satisfying "click, click!"
