I am in Sandersville GA. hunting a very big Whitetail, I have located! I cannot post a pic now but here, is a thorough description. The gun arrived and other than a complete bore cleaning [plenty of copper and lead...now gone!] the bore is perfect, looks pristine. The exterior rust blue, with a very...very light Flitz polish is now 97%. The only exterior damage, was an attempt to drill and tap a scope block on the barrel, in the middle of the SEDGLEY name that was unsuccessful(barely dented the metal). The single stage trigger is very nice at 2.5lbs., with the tiniest bit of creep. The stock and checkering {like it or not} was in well used but excellent condition, and once cleaned of years of dirt and grime had a nice figure, though nothing fancy. However when rubbed with oil, the stock darkened and the grain really popped. The action feeds from the internal magazine like butter. The G&H side mount base took an extra 7/8 in. mount I have and now all I need, is a clean Norman-Ford Texan 22mm. scope. [anyone have one?] I have several Alaskans but I really don't want to waste this quality glass on a .22 Hornet used for an occasional plinker. The recoil pad is not vintage and I am looking for something that I can put on without a lot of grinding. Comments are welcome.
I paid virtually nothing for this rifle AND AS A RESULT and are in the process of having a slightly modified 1922 Stock made for it at Murray's Gunstock [see murraysgunstocks.com - ask for Randy tell him Jerry sent you, he's a great guy and Q.U. supporter!] . Planned Stock Detail: No barrel band or finger grooves, Trapdoor Checkered Niedner Buttplate & Gripcap, 2 screw island swivel studs if possible, 48 Lyman with Blank Filler. Plain grain walnut [from Murray/Randy] stained in Sedgley Walnut with Sedgley Deluxe Checkering Pattern [done by John Reese of Polson MT.]and Schnabel Forearm Tip Style. Let me know what you think? JERRY

Thanks Doc: I see it just sold at Amoskeag in Sept. of this year for $1100 + 20.5% with a cloudy Alaskan scope on it. I didn't pay nearly that. I noticed it was part of the Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection. I Googled him and found out that he was a New Hampshire State Legislator who was quite passionate in his protection of Gun Rights and Gun Collecting.[see link below] http://www.concordmonitor.com/community/...generous-spirit

Stretch was quit a guy-and a good gun guy and strong supporter of both the first and the second amendment. He had a lot of guns in his collection-I saw him buy a lot of them over the years at many many auctions. They, Amoskeag, retired his bidder number after he passed and has been going though something like 3500 gun collection to auction them off. He will be missed,I am lucky enough to have won a couple of guns from his collection and may well win a few more. here is a link to a speech by Dan McGuire on Stretch Kennedy if you would like to read more about him ; http://granitegrok.com/blog/2014/01/unanimous-consent-for-richard-stretch-kennedy

Doc:How astute of you! There are two things, you may find, to be of interest? The first is, whomever bought the scope, paid more for it than I did the rifle including, auction surcharge! The second, even by breaking the rifle into two subparts for resale, by the time he paid his fees, he barely made anything to speak of, on his investment. Personally I dislike the canabalizing tactics of this dealer, but to each his own. Thanks for the heads up...much appreciated, here in the Land of Cotton. Warmest Regards and GOD Bless Jerry

What made that a $1000 item? I could see $5-600, maybe, if someone had to have it because condition is so nice, but still. Perhaps someone crazy to build an ersatz 1903A4 no matter the cost? Or am I woefully out of touch concerning the value of Alaskans and G&H mounts?
(OT mini-rant: People with sniper rifle frenzy are sure driving up the cost of such items (if indeed that was the case here). I suspect there are more 1903A4s extant now than there were in 1945.)

As far as I know 1903 sniper rifles did not use G&H mounts and M1s used a different rings. Almost starts me rethinking the 3 Alaskans and G&H setups I've been hoarding
I learn something every day, and a lot of times it's that what I learned the day before was wrong
