Yes, It that time of year again! Deer blasting season in upstate NY.
And this year I have a new toyAn Excalibur Crossbow!
Crossbow at 70yards*...through heart. - 7 pointer DOA.
*No kidding 70 yards!
A rare event as hunting conditions were ideal....At 4 oclock on November 10th it was sunny and bright with very little wind coming from the west (in my face).
I was 20ft up a triple trunked tree hidden from view on my well broken in Lone Wolf Alpha stand.
My back firmly against the eastern most trunk and the stand just barley touching the other 2 trunks a couple feet forward and on each side of me. As an added bonus there were a couple nice limbs that could be called into service as restsdepending upon where the deer materialized?
I spotted him meandering my way about 400 years out on the woods edge. At that point, I went into stealth mode.not moving at all and hiding my masked face behind the tree so there was no way he would see me. I knew the wind was in my favor so that was not an issue. I became more nervous as he began to enter the field immediately in front of me and make his way up the trail towards my position.
Apparently my pituitary gland has not mellowed with age as the hit of adrenalin it provided go me shaking pretty good! I figured it would be either a quick or tough shot if he maintained his trajectory.I was wrong. At precisely 70 yards he stopped and began whacking his antlers on the only small tree directly adjacent to the trail. He was total exposed broadside and not paying any attention to anything but his head butting practice so I made my move.
Slowly I lifted the crossbow from my lap and placed it on the limb in front of me. I was sitting but had to scooch up and forward to prevent the bows limb from whacking the tree upon firing. I was aiming almost 30 seconds prior to discharging the crossbow and the bow was almost still resting on that limb. I calmed myself down, put the ranging reticle of the Nikon 3x bolt scope on the deers chest hiked up the vertical on the reticle to what I figured was 70 yards squeezed slowly and followed through.it worked out good!
The Easton Power Bolt went completely through the deer and was sticking a good 3 inches into the ground on his off side. Specifically the bolt went through heart....the deers heart had precise broadhead (NAP 125gr Spitfire) pattern hole through it.
The buck ran maybe 30 yards and just flopped over DOA!
Wahoo...
