I was talking to a gunsmith and mentioned that my 1972 Victor Sarasqueta has chrome barrels; when he immidiately cut me off to point out that only inexpensive barrels are chromed. He went on to say that higher end guns do not have chromed barrels because they are made with better metal by better barrel makers.
Is he right or wron?

Wrong; The steel the bbls are made from has little to do with whether they are plated or not. Some of the "Really" better guns may be made to order to give a certain pattern with a given load, which requires firng, checking pattern then adjusting choke, firing again etc. Such guns are unlikely to be plated as the choke adjustment would remove it in the choke area. Beyond that it's more the policy of the maker & intended use of the gun. Makers of "Better" guns may also anticipate their guns will receive better care & plating not be as needful in preventing corrosion.

As a general rule, Italian mass makers (like Beretta) seem to have been plating their bores on a regular basis for quite some time. SKB also. Far less frequently seen on Spanish guns, for whatever reason. Chromed bores are very easy to clean, but I think it's pretty much academic since we've stopped using noncorrosive primers.

Miller's right. CSM's mid priced RBL has Titanium Nitride coated bores and has the exact same 4140 barrel material as his high end guns (unless you specify Krupp, and why would you? can you recite some specific advantage or metallurgical characteristic that is "better"?). The "advantage" of chrome would be especially beneficial for target shooters that put more rounds thru their guns (or don't clean at all) or waterfowlers for added protection, IMO.
