I've a cheap Cabela's rimfire scope on my Kimber SuperAmerica, but thanks to the rifle's inherent accuracy and Eley Tenex, I do not see the need to up-grade scopes.

If you don't see the difference between a $45 scope and a $450 one, buy the one for $45. You will get what you pay for. Lowell, you're using $10+ per box ammo and an $1800 rifle. Sure makes sense to use a $45 scope. :p JL

Well, Jim, no one can accuse Lowell of being the brightest blub in the room!

I'm not a European who hunts after sundown.
I got to the woods today at 8:00 AM, went to my parents for lunch, back to the woods and gone at 4:00. Mainly tractor up-keep today.
The woods gets spooky, who know whats out there!
I don't need a light gathering scope, or to see fleas on the squirrel.
The rifle already shoots like a target rifle, why spent 200.00 or more for a Leupold.
Besides, Tenex are close to 18.00 with tax, I need to save somewhere.

I got a nice clean 2.5X El Paso Weaver for my .45-70. Seemed like enuf as I don't need to see very well to know where to put my shoulder and it hits me every time just fine.

I think any solid 4X should be good to go. Burris and Leupold are easy buys, as they back up their product and have good reputations. Any old scope will do if you are not a bucking rifle bouncer. I've been amazed at some cheap scopes' performance but they haven't shown their integrity down the line. I've injured, rather than killed, and can easily blame a tube that no longer performed as tuned.
I have a 2-7X RF Leupold on my CZ-452 American. I have no complaints with that scope but I know you can probably get some reliable glass cheaper than that.

Eleys' smoke smells like tweed, and besides, who wants the Hubble Telescope sitting atop of a hunting rifle.

PostOak - - have both the 452 American and the Varmint model. The question is -- what are you going to use it for? I have a Leupold 4X 22lr scope on the American and its great - for most small game and plinking. On the Varmint model, I currently have an older, but spring-water-clear Redfield 3X9 and a 15 oz. trigger. You can guess what my intentions are here, and I intend to scope-up when the right deal presents itself.

Years ago, I kept track of the ranges I shot gray squirrels at here in our Sierra foothills - the average distance was 46 feet, so I hear you on lesser power in some instances. On the other hand, the same rifle was used on ground squirrels, often at much longer distances. The rifle was a Winchester M75 Target modified rather competently by some previous owner into a sporter. The scope was an old fixed power 6X B&L. The 6 got the job done in both instances, but if I could have only one scope for a 452, for the purposes I would put it to, it would be a Leupold 2X7.

Well the little CZ 452 Lux (?)is a full stocked light rifle. I don't want to make it unwieldy with too big a scope. A scope of less than 12 ounces and less than 10 or 11 inches would fit the envelope.

I generally prefer lower powered scopes, than most of y'all seem to - eye relief seems less critical. I also generally prefer fixed power, because they are simpler, lighter, fewer problems with parallax (good point doublegunhq - premier reticle used to adjust leupoldts) and transmit light better. Probably not need in a rimfire scope.

But, I got to thinking I might want to shoot small varmits, so up to a 4x or so might be OK - and a lower power for snap shots.

Maybe a 1-4 X ?

Mine's a tale that can't be told, my freedom I hold dear.

This is where the advantages of putting the bucks out for good optics comes into play, in my estimation. Never owned a 2X7 Leupold RF, but everything I've heard has been favorable ( eg. Jacob Jesus). The straight 4X lightweight I do have is a dream. And, in general, what I do know about Leupold products has been favorable. Making reliable, bright, sharp-imaged variables is something the better scope makers have learned years ago and I think that any weight differential between the 4X and 2X7 Leupold RFs is very small.

Last, your little LUX CZ is capable of less than .5" accuracy at 50 yards, properly tuned, with selected bullets and well glassed - - or the CZ posts I occasionally read over on the rimfire forums are blowing hot air. A 7X glass at 60 yards or more is going to yield a much better target than a 4X on small targets. Then think one hundred yards. And, then, of course, if you want to tread into deep woods after grays you've got 2X and 3X power settings on your side. Seems like a natural to me.

Best of luck.
