the slotted screw has the slot filled . push down and unscrew the lock

The side plates contain the lock mechanisms for the right and left barrels. The lever is attached to a long screw that seats in the right lock. Turning the lever counterclockwise removes the screw and allows the lock plates to be removed for inspection, repair etc.
The slotted screw in the fences secures the bushed striker - the cylinder in the breech face that houses the firing pin. It also acts as a gas relief valve if the firing pin pierces the primer.
Such a long, long time to be gone, and a short time to be there.

yes - I assumed the OP was asking about the slotted screw in the fences.

A word of caution here: As Doverham has described this screw is to allow quick access to the locks for cleaning and maintenence. However every tine you remove the locks you potentially create wear on a vunerable part of the stock which are the fingers surrounding the locks. IMO: This should only be done when cleaning is absolutely necessary. Jim

And reassembly requires correct positioning of the cocking rods.
Don't force anything, the locks should drop in.
