I have never seen any indication that any of the US makers changed their guns when the new higher pressure shells were introduced in the 1920's, with the exception of Ithaca. The Drawings and Specifications book for LC Smith shows only one barrel change, and that was for the featherweight 12 in 1912. SAAMI was established in the mid 1920's as I recall, and about the same time Hunter Arms started putting their proof mark on the LC Smith guns. I don't know what the earliest SAAMI specs were for shotguns, but today. the pressure specs are the same for a given gauge regardless of the payload in both 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells. The 3.5 inch 12 ga calls for higher pressures however.

Tom;
That was what I thought also. Just thought I would throw it out in the form of a question rather than a statement. With the new heavier loads in the 20's was also I believe when the concentrated condemning of damascus began. The new loads provided a fine excuse to condemn the old & sell new guns.

as with any gun, old or new, shoot ammo that is in the pressure range of the times in which the gun was made...but, keep in mind that wood is the weakest componet of all guns. also, keep in mind that wood does dry out and become more brittle, the older it becomes. so, your smith has to be at least 60 years old... treat it with tlc and hopefully it will last another 60 year or more.

I haven`t taken apart the receiver to clean it yet. It has cracks and I`d like to know how to fix these. The barrels and forearm came out pretty nice.

This might help, but both the repair and reassembly can be a challenge

I`d like to just repair it so I can shoot it and hunt with it without hurtin it any further. It has a chip lifting up on the stock but it isn`t completely off yet. I was gonna separate the stock and maybe glue the piece back down before it comes off all the way.

burch, if you can lift it up with a toothpick, use another one and put a tiny drop of Crazy Glue on it. Same with any tiny cracks behind the locks. It is easier if you take the lock/s off and put it from the inside. It will hold up until it can be done right.

Gorilla Glue is good, but not for this. You need to dampen both pieces for it to work, and then it foams. Use the Crazy glue.
