Hyper velocity was not a big deal back when we were shooting lead. Only when steel was the payload did it make sense to try to drive the shot as fast as possible to try to overcome the poor balistic properties of steel. My favorite lead load was 1 3/8 ounce at 1250 fps. Pattern was my concern and often used fillers to buffer the shot to get 75-80+% patterns. A lot of ducks hated to see those loads come out of the coat back in those days.
